The birthing chair has a stool (2) with recess opening to the front and a seat at the back for the birthing partner. The birthing chair has a removable and/or narrow incline-adjustable backrest (32) set between the stool (2) and rear seat (4). The backrest rests against the back seat and the incline of the backrest can be adjusted by increasing or shortening the distance between seat and chair. The backrest can be fixed freely swivelling on the birthing chair. The backrest can be fixed by a retaining bolt (36) which passes through bearing eyes (38) at the back of the birthing chair (2) and a bearing bush at the lower end of the backrest.
