PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To quickly perform a focusing search for reading out information from an optical disk having a multilayered recording layer. SOLUTION: A focusing search for a first layer 11 is performed from an initial position where an optical pickup 13 is descended and a focusing servo for a second layer 12 is performed from an initial position where the optical pickup 13 is ascended by a servo controlling device 16. When the servo is turned OFF and the focusing position of an objective lens in the inside of the optical pickup 13 is moved close to a target recording layer, a focusing point position is detected from the change of the level of an error signal outputted from the optical pickup 13. When the focusing point position is detected, the focusing servo is turned ON. When the focusing servo does not start, activation is retried in an inverse direction.
