Provided is a composition comprising an extract of Aralia cordata THUNB. which shows cartilage protecting effect by promoting the expression of cartilage constituting materials and inhibiting the degradation thereof, and has anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect so as to prevent and treat osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. The composition for preventing and treating articular cartilage injury and arthritis comprises 0.1-50 wt.% of an extract of Aralia cordata THUNB. as an effective ingredient and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier or an excipient. The extract is prepared by using a polar solvent selected from the group consisting of water, C1-4 lower alcohol, and a mixture thereof.
