PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ether compound desirable as a surrogate for a polyethylene glycol mono(p-alkylphenyl) ether compound, a method for producing the same, a method for producing an ether compound comprising structural units derived from polyethylene glycol having at least three ethylene glycol molecules in the molecule and structural units derived from an alkylphenol and used as an intermediate in the production of the ether compound, and a method for performing the accurate quantitative determination of the polyethylene glycol mono(p-alkylphenyl) ether in an environmental sample. SOLUTION: The ether compound is an ether compound represented by formula (1) and has at least four carbon atoms with a mass number 13 in the molecule.
