PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal device which has excellent display properties by preventing quality reduction of a retardation layer due to an organic solvent when a color filter layer is formed and quality reduction of the color filter layer due to water and an organic solvent contained in the retardation layer.

SOLUTION: The liquid crystal device 100 includes: a first substrate 11; a second substrate 31; a liquid crystal layer 40 positioned between the first and the second substrates 11 and 31; the retardation layer 20 formed on at least a part on the surface on the liquid crystal layer 40 side of the first substrate 11; a protective layer 14 covering at least the retardation layer 20 and composed of a transparent inorganic material; and the color filter layer 16 formed on the protective layer 14.
