<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an azo compound which is useful for an anisotropic film, such as a polarization film, has high dichroism mainly in a short wavelength range, and is excellent in durability. <P>SOLUTION: This azo compound for an anisotropic film is characterized by expressing the form of its free acid with a formula (1). (In the formula, Ar<SP>1</SP>and Ar<SP>2</SP>express independently a phenylene group which may have a substituent group, and 1, 4-naphtylene group or a heteroaromatic ring group, respectively. B<SP>1</SP>and B<SP>2</SP>express independently an alkyl group which may have a substituent group, a phenyl group, a naphthyl group, a heteroaromatic ring group, an alkenyl group, or an alkynyl group, respectively. Any of Ar<SP>1</SP>, Ar<SP>2</SP>, B<SP>1</SP>and B<SP>2</SP>has at least one of a sulfo group or a carboxy group. n expresses an integer of 1-3.
