PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten the time required for playback starting of a disk device sharing a CD and DVD. SOLUTION: An optical pickup 2 is provided with a first laser source 45 for CD and a second laser source 46 for DVD to generate laser beams of short wavelength and large output. The driving of the second laser source 46 capable of coping with the kind (e.g. DVD) having the maximum played back possibility (i.e., frequency in use) is executed at the last time in the discriminating operation of the sequential driving of the first and second laser sources 45, 46 for the discrimination of the kind. As to the playback of the DVD having the maximum frequency in use, the discriminating operation for the drive of the second layer source 46 is performed after the discriminating operation of the drive of the first laser source 45, then this operation can shift to the playback operation keeping the successive driving operation of the second laser source 46 as it is. The operation for starting the playback of the DVD is not necessary to do plural times, so that the time required for playback starting is shortened.
