The invention relates to a method for detecting and localizing particles by means of electromagnetic waves. To this end, the following steps are carried out: selecting particles (01) with predetermined magnetic or thermal properties which enable a micro-stimulation; introducing the particles (01) into an examination object; transmitting electromagnetic waves (07) to the examination object (02, 03) and receiving a backscattered signal (08). According to the invention, a time-varying external force is impressed upon the examination object, wherein this force is selected in such a way that it magnetically or thermally micro-stimulates the particles (01) on account of the predetermined properties of the latter. The backscattered signal (08) is evaluated by correlating the time profile of the backscattered signal (08) and the change in the external force over time. The invention also relates to a device for detecting and localizing particles (01) contained in an examination object (02, 03).
