PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a transition to a quick start mode under such a state as a program reflecting the user's viewing and listening tendency can be received in a broadcast receiver having a standby mode for bringing the receiver into waiting state and the quick start mode for bringing the receiver into waiting state while shortening the activation period as compared with that in the standby mode. SOLUTION: Program information including the channel of a digital broadcast signal received upon power up of the broadcast receiver, and the start time of a program broadcast on this channel is acquired and stored as start record information in correspondence with the power-on time of the receiver, and then starting time of the broadcast receiver is predicted based on the program start time included in the program information stored as the start record information. A transition is made from the standby mode to the quick start mode with reference to the start time thus predicted, and the channel stored as the start record information is selected when power is turned on in the quick start mode.
