The invention is intended for an internal combustion engine with an exhaust gas turbocharger (13), with at least one heat exchanger (17) arranged in the flow path (14) to the inlet duct and with an exhaust gas recirculation valve (19) in an exhaust-gas recirculation line (18) branching off from the exhaust pipe (8; 8') and opening into the flow path (14; 15') leading to the inlet duct. In order to be able to recirculate cooled exhaust gas for nitrogen dioxide reduction even in the high-load range, without impairing the functioning of components by soiling, it is proposed to arrange an exhaust gas purification device (21; 21a), through which the recirculated exhaust gas passes, upstream of the heat exchanger (17; 22) provided for the cooling of the recirculated exhaust gas.
