IMPROVED 3-DIMENSIONAL SCANNING APPARATUS AND METHOD

An apparatus for capturing 3-dimesional representations of objects. The apparatus includes a laser adapted to provide a laser projection onto the object, a mount for the laser adapted to allow the laser projection on the object to be moved over the object, a first camera adapted to capture an images of the laser projection on the object, a second camera adapted to capture an image substantially excluding the laser projection on the object, and a processor adapted to capture a sequence of images from first and second cameras. These images correspond to given stages of progression of movement of the laser projection over the object. This enables portions of images captured with the second camera to be assigned to a geometric mesh representation of the object created with images from the first camera. The invention also provides a corresponding method.
