PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a face authentication apparatus for authenticating a face image with high precision by acquiring a stable face image of a pedestrian in real time even when a photography environment, such as a lighting condition, changes while the pedestrian is walking in an area to be photographed. SOLUTION: A face authentication apparatus 1A acquires a high gradation image including a pedestrian's face by a high gradation image acquisition section 101, converts the high gradation image acquired by gradation conversion processing into a low gradation image so that brightness in the face area of the high gradation image acquired by a gradation conversion section 103 becomes optimal, and a face characteristic extraction section 104 extracts face characteristic information a face collation section 106 performs face collation on the basis of the image of low gradation whose brightness is optimized.
