A method of making a wind turbine component, eg a blade, comprises providing a mould, placing a dry fibrous pre-form in the mould, admitting resin into the mould and curing the resin. According to the invention, the pre-form is pre-heated before it is placed in the mould. The pre-form may be preheated to a temperature, eg 40oC, which is higher than the temperature, eg 30oC, at which the resin is admitted into the mould. A pre-heating apparatus 50 may comprise a support 52 in the form of a flat surface 54 on which a heating mat 58 is arranged. In use, the pre-form 60 is paced on the heating mat 58 and covered with an insulating blanket 62. A plurality of pre-forms may be stored in heating apparatus (150, fig.10) until needed. After the pre-forms 60 and other components are placed in the mould (70, figs.7-9), the heated mould may maintain the pre-form pre-heating temperature. Thus the resin perfusion process can begin quickly without the need to wait for the pre-forms to heat up. |
