<p>A mold consists of concentric cylinders (41, 42), 5 to 30 mm thick, with close-fitting removable end plates (43, 46). The cores (44) are located by means of recesses in the lower plate (43) or by a framework against the outer cylinder (41). One end plate is removed to fill the lower half of the mold and to place the cores in position. The mold is then turned upside down and filling completed. An independent claim is also included for the process sequence of placing one plate (43) in position, locating the cores (44), filling the mold up to the top of the cores, covering with the other plate (46), turning the mold over, removing the first plate (43) and completing the filling. The plate (43) is then replaced and the assembly pressed. Subsequently the pressed article is removed and carbonized at 750 to 1300 [deg]C. This is followed by melt infiltration to form the corresponding carbides, at least on the surface.</p> |
