PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display apparatus which smoothly moves particles under a low application voltage and displays stable images without adhesion of particles to the surface of a substrate. SOLUTION: In the image display apparatus including a pair of substrates facing each other, provided that at least one of them is transparent and particles are placed in a gap between the substrates, wherein each of substrates has a layer containing a compound having a silicon structure on a surface faced with another.
