A shoe(12) for pressing the tread strip compound(16) onto a rotating tire carcass is mounted to allow movement transversely across the carcass surface(21). The shoe breadth is less than that of the carcass and applies the compound as a continuous strip until the appropriate carcass surface area is covered. An Independent claim is made for a process for production of a tread strip on a carcass(22) in which the tread strip compound(16) is fed to the rotating tire carcass surface via a pressing shoe(12) whose movement guides the tread strip.
