The damper has a piston (1) moving up and down inside a bore. Fluid can flow through the piston, entering and leaving through apertures (9,11) near the edges. There is some resistance to flow of the fluid. A flexible plate (21) on one side of the piston has holes (27) arranged in a ring formation. A valve plate (29) has flaps (35) held by a Belleville washer (31) and the holes are covered by the inner portion (37) of the valve plate. When the piston is moving up, the plate blocks flow of fluid through the holes. When the piston is moving down, the valve plate moves up to allow fluid to flow through the holes.
