Process to enhance railway line soil load bearing characteristics by insertion of concrete columns

In a process to enhance the load-bearing characteristics of soil (11), an upper layer with high load-bearing characteristics (15) is placed over a soft layer (16) with low load-bearing and easily deformable characteristics. In the process, vertical columns (31) are introduced into the soft layer (16). The columns extend essentially only through the soft layer. The columns represent 40 to 60 per cent of the soft soil volume.
