PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a stroke distinguishing method of a four-stroke engine preventing the occurrence of erroneous distinction in a non-combustion state such as at misfire. SOLUTION: A pulse signal Pi by continuous two rotations of a crank shaft is detected, thereby comparing the degree of a number NE180A of rotations in a second previous rising stroke of a piston with a number NE180B of rotations in the last rising stroke. When it is determined that the number NE180B of rotations in the last rising stroke is increased and a number NE180C of rotations in a present rising stroke is decreased as compared with the number NE180B in the last rising stroke, the present rising stroke determined as decreased is distinguished as a compressing stroke. The stroke distinction is carried out by determining the increase of a number of rotations due to combustion, so that the execution of the stroke distinguishing processing in the non-combustion state such as at misfire is avoided.
