The invention relates to a machine tool head for friction stir welding, with a floating rotating shoulder (2) connected at one end of a cylindrical support (4) with an inner axial channel (4a), a rotating pin (3) emerging from a shoulder (2), and it is connected to a motor (7) by means of a drive shaft (8) arranged in the inner channel (4a) such that the cylindrical support (4) can move axially with respect to the drive shaft (8), and adjustment means (5) for adjusting the relative position between the shoulder (2) and the pin (3) in the material to be welded, the support (4) and the shaft (8) being coupled in a sliding key joint such that the rotation of the shaft (8) confers its rotating movement simultaneously to the pin (3) and to the support (4), and the support (4) being arranged rotatably in a mobile support structure (10) axially slidable through the adjustment means (5) with respect to the drive shaft (8).
