PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten paper-discharge stand-by time by shortening a time for switching between a main tray and a tray group. SOLUTION: This sheet sorting device comprises a detection means 4 for elevatably mounting a tray group 2 and a main tray 1 to upper and lower parts, and detecting a distance between a lower face of the tray group 2, and the upper face of the main tray 1 or the uppermost sheet face put on the main tray 1. When the tray putting a sheet P discharged from a sheet discharging port 11 is switched from one tray to the other tray, both of the trays are simultaneously elevated. When the detection means 4 detects that the distance between both of the trays becomes not more than a predetermined distance, an elevating speed of the tray on the rear side in a moving direction is reduced, or the tray is stopped for a predetermined time.
