<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain high contrast by optimizing disposition of optical retardation plates in a semi-transmissive liquid crystal display device using a vertical alignment liquid crystal. <P>SOLUTION: First and second optical retardation plates 110, 130 are stuck to front and rear faces of a liquid crystal cell 410 comprising a liquid crystal layer and a pair of substrates interposing the liquid crystal layer, and further polarizing plates 120, 140 are stuck to the respective optical retardation plates so as to make the absorption axes form 90° angle with each other. The respective optical retardation plates are formed by combining half-wave plates 114, 134 with the slow axes inclined by 15° with respect to absorption axes of the polarizing plates stuck to the respective optical retardation plates and quarter-wave plates 112, 132 with the slow axes inclined by 15° with respect thereto. By combining the half-wave plates and the quarter-wave plates, wavelength dependence of optical retardation produced via the optical retardation plates is reduced, and the high contrast is obtained. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
