A mobile communication system and a program upgrade method are provided to upgrade a new version of a program through an SMS(Short Message Service) message, thereby preventing a user's inconvenience of accessing a service center or a computer to download and receive an upgraded program of the new version. A mobile communication terminal(10) transmits an SMS message which includes a predetermined code value which demands program upgrading. If the predetermined code value is included in the received SMS message, an SMS server(30) transmits mobile communication terminal information and program upgrade information. An upgrade server(40) generates a program upgrade file based on the program upgrade information and the mobile communication terminal information, and transmits the generated file to the terminal(10).
