An apparatus and a method for driving a liquid crystal display device are provided to reduce driving current of a light source automatically when a human body contacts an output of a master inverter and/or a slave inverter and to recover the driving current of the light source automatically when the output is separated from the human body to prevent a user from being damaged resulting from the driving current. An apparatus(200) for driving a liquid crystal display device comprises a driving adjuster(210), a master inverter(220), a slave inverter(230), and a current limiting circuit(240). The driving adjuster reduces/recovers duty ratio of a pulse width modulation signal used for generating the driving current of a backlight assembly(150). The master inverter reduces/recovers the dimension of the driving current of the backlight assembly according to the duty ratio of the pulse width modulation signal. The slave inverter reduces/recovers the dimension of the driving current of the backlight assembly. The current limiting circuit applies a predetermined enable signal to the ground or to the driving adjuster according to the phases of the feedback currents. Thereby preventing a user from being damaged due to the driving current.
