The device has a coating (2) applied on the upper surface of a workpiece (1) in sectional manner, and a linear varied and temporally varying contrast sample (6) along that upper surface. A light source is provided for illuminating the coating with pulsating light, so that, when the light encounters the coating, the light absorbs contrast of the contrast sample and an ultrasonic field with a temporally varied direction of propagation, and a temporally varied focus depth is suggested in the workpiece. An independent claim is included for a method for the non-destructive ultrasonic testing of a workpiece.
