A system, method and apparatus for enabling a closed chassis debug control interface are disclosed. In one embodiment, the system comprises a debug mode control (DCI) unit; a Type-C connector; a Universal Serial Bus (USB) physical (phy) interface coupled to the connector; and interface logic coupled to the DCI unit and the USB phy interface to exchange debug control interface (DCI) signaling between the connector and the DCI unit.

a debug control interface (DCI) unit; a Type-C connector; logic to generate configuration signals; a Universal Serial Bus physical (phy) interface coupled to the Type-C connector and the logic, the USB phy interface including first and second transceivers configured based on the configuration signals from the logic to be either a receiver or transmitter of DCI signals; and an interface coupled to the DCI unit and the USB phy interface to transmit and receive DCI signaling between the USB phy interface and the DCI unit.
