The invention provides a simple and cheap device for converting a displacement over a surface into a binary code. To this end this surface is divided into a number of adjacent discrete zones, each of the kind which emits a distinct identification signal, said signals being supplied to an evaluation and coding device which derives from the sequence of the respective zone signals the direction in which the displacement occurs and identifies each direction by a binary code, composing the ultimate code surface from the code which represents the firstly activated zone followed by a sequence of code units which each represent a displacement in a predetermined direction. |
