PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a stabilizer having a small and simple structure. SOLUTION: The high-brightness discharge lamp ballast comprises a lamp operation part constituted so as to supply power from a power source to the high-brightness discharge lamp; a lamp voltage detection device constituted so as to detect a voltage to be impressed to the high-brightness discharge lamp; a lamp state deciding part constituted so as to decide whether the high-brightness discharge lamp is in a state of being turned on or not, depending on the voltage detected by a lamp voltage detection device; an auxiliary lamp switching element constituted so as to connect an auxiliary lamp having a rated voltage to the power source; and a control device constituted so as to control the auxiliary lamp switching element so as to impress a voltage nearly equal to the rated voltage of the auxiliary lamp on the auxiliary lamp when the lamp state deciding part decides that the power is supplied to the high-brightness discharge lamp and the high-brightness discharge lamp is not in a state of being turned on.
