<p>Data integrity of the data (13, 14) stored in a rewritable memory (5) of a portable data carrier (1) is guaranteed by an examination device (9) of the data carrier, wherein the data (13) checks for an attack of computer viruses (17) according to at least one predetermined condition and possible computer viruses (17) are rendered harmless by an eliminating device (10). The examination device (9), which is arranged directly on the data carrier (1), examines data (13) which is transferred to the data carrier (1) and also data (13) which is already stored in the rewritable memory (5). Preferably, the examination consists of comparing known virus patterns (12) with the data (13) and the examination device (9).
