A method for selecting a reference picture is provided to determine a reference picture index by frame in a picture or slice level and determine a reference picture index according to a coding mode of a macro block based on the reference picture index by frame in a macro block level, thereby providing reference picture information used in motion compensation. A method for selecting a reference picture comprises the steps of: acquiring a reference picture list including information about plural reference pictures by frame; determining an initial reference picture index for the plural reference pictures of the reference picture list based on display order information about the plural reference pictures, wherein a reference picture index number increases for reference pictures with a reverse display order for a picture having a field macro block, and decreases for reference pictures with a sequential display order, and the index number of the reference pictures with the reverse display order is greater than an index number of the reference pictures with the sequential display order; realigning a reference picture index allocated to each reference picture of the reference picture list; acquiring the reference picture index indicating a reference picture by field for the field macro block; determining one of reference pictures by frame included into the reference picture list on the basis of a value that the reference picture index is divided by two; and selecting a reference picture by field having the same parity as the parity of the field macro block if the reference picture index is an even number.
