A rural landscape including a series of water retention courses (27A, 27B, 27C) run substantially parallel to contour lines (13) and immediately upstream of raised banks (25A, 25B, 25C) each of which preferably includes putrescible waste (32) A spillway or drain (34A, 34B, 34C) extends under the adjacent bank from each water retention course. The soil below the water retention course (27) is saturated with water thereby preventing in ground salt water rising. Impure waste water can be purified by passing in sequence through the water retention course (27) with their aquatic vegetation (37).
