Provided are a high strength steel sheet for a container, which can be advantageously used as a lid of a can, and which is particularly suitable for use as a material for an EOE can; and a method for producing same. The high strength steel sheet for a container has a constituent composition that contains, in terms of mass pcnt , 0.0010-0.10 pcnt of C, 0.04 pcnt or less of Si, 0.10-0.80 pcnt of Mn, 0.007-0.100 pcnt of P, 0.10 pcnt or less of S, 0.001-0.100 pcnt of Al and 0.0010-0.0250 pcnt of N, with the remainder consisting of Fe and unavoidable impurities, has a difference between the dislocation density in the outermost surface layer and the dislocation density at a depth from the surface of 1/4 of the sheet thickness of 1.94 x 1014 m-2 or less in the sheet thickness direction, has a tensile strength of 400 MPa or more, and has a breaking elongation of 10 pcnt or more. |
