A method for preventing the loss of a short message in an MSC is provided to enable the MSC to perform a function for preventing the messages loss, caused by congestion of short messages, thereby reducing loads of an SMSC and addressing a problem that a subscriber has to attempt to re-transmit the short message. A method for preventing the loss of a short message in an MSC(Mobile Switching Center) comprises the following steps of: monitoring whether there is congestion of short messages in an SMSC(Short Message Service Center)(S301); if so, generating a short message for informing that a short message is arbitrarily transmitted, and then transmitting the generated short message to a caller(S305); storing a short message, received during congestion of the short messages, in a special memory area(S306); monitoring whether the short message congestion is released(S307); and if so, re-transmitting the short message stored in the special memory area(S308,S309).
