There is disclosed a power supply system including an AC adapter for converting AC power into DC power and an electronic device to which the DC power converted bay the AC adapter is supplied by a power supply line. The AC adapter has a memory containing data for identifying the AC adapter, AC adapter reception means for receiving a signal from the electronic device, processing means for processing the signal received by the AC adapter reception means according to the data stored in the memory, and AC adapter transmission means for transmitting the processing result of the processing means to the electronic device. The electronic device has electronic device transmission means for transmitting a signal containing a random number to the AC adapter, operation processing means for operating the random number, electronic device reception means for receiving the signal processed by the AC adapter concerning the random number from the AC adapter, and comparison means for comparing the signal received by the electronic device reception means to the signal subjected to operation process by the operation means. The electronic device transmits a signal for controlling the AC adapter to the AC adapter according to the comparison result obtained by the comparison means.
