PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetostrictive torque sensor and an electric steering system capable of reducing current consumption, while enhancing the reliability. SOLUTION: The magnetostrictive torque sensor 30 includes a first magnetostrictive film 31 and a second magnetostrictive film 32 which are provided on a ferromagnetic pinion shaft 5, and a first detecting coil 33 and a second detecting coil 34 for detecting changes in the magnetic characteristics of the first and second films 31, 32, and detects a torque input to the pinion shaft 5 based on the detection results by the first and second coils 33, 34. The torque sensor has a bias magnetization means for applying a bias magnetic field to the pinion shaft 5 to magnetize it, and the bias magnetization means temporarily generates a bias magnetic field at a predetermined timing.
