The device (1) has a controller (2) and an exciting field controller (24) with a field output stage (23) for controlling an exciting field that is generated by a field coil (25) in a generator. An actual value detection device (20) is connected in front of the controller, where an actual value detection device (30) is connected in parallel to the former detection device. The detection device is switchable independent of the former detection device. The detection device (30) and a switching device i.e. transistor, are arranged for applying control signals on a switching component i.e. chip. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a generator.
