New boron icosahedral ester, carbamate, and ether compounds formed from Cs2[<i>closo</i>-B12(OH)12], are disclosed. All of the hydroxyl groups on per-<i>B</i>-hydroxylated icosahedral boranes are converted to perether and perester derivatives (including carbamate esters) with the general formulas [<i>closo</i>B12(OCOR)12]<2-> and [<i>closo</i>-B12(OCONHR)]<2-> where R is an alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, alkenylalkyl, alkynylalkyl, aryl, aralkyl, or a combination thereof. Furthermore, mono-anionic and neutral <i>hyperclose</i>-perether species are formed by oxidizing the <i>closo</i>-perether derivatives.
