The method involves determining environment information by a sensor e.g. ultrasonic sensor. The sensor is arranged at a rear end of a commercial vehicle. Two phases e.g. blind ride phase, object characteristics of a hierarchical model of an object i.e. swap trailer (1), are selected in a sensor-selected manner distance-dependently, such that modeling of the object takes place based on individual object characteristics during the approximation of the commercial vehicle to the object.
