Methods of treating a subject having cancer with a BET inhibitor, methods of selecting a subject for treatment with a BET inhibitor, methods of predicting responsiveness of a subject having cancer to a BET inhibitor, methods of communicating the likelihood of response of a subject having cancer to a BET inhibitor, and methods of modulating the treatment of a subject undergoing BET inhibitor treatment for cancer are described. The described methods include the steps of performing a nucleic acid-based detection assay to detect the expression level of an eRNA transcribed from a myc-associated enhancer element in a sample containing cancer cells from the subject and determining the expression level of the eRNA in the cells in the sample.
