A method and an apparatus for detecting the residual amount of bills in a cash cassette using a supersonic sensor are provided to accurately determine the residual amount by detecting the thickness of remaining bills. An apparatus for detecting the residual amount of bills in a cash cassette includes a supersonic sensor(180), a distance calculator(160), a communication unit(120), and a controller(200). The supersonic sensor transmits a supersonic wave into the bills in the cash cassette and receives reflected supersonic wave. The distance calculator analyzes the supersonic wave received from the supersonic sensor and calculates the distance between the supersonic sensor and the remaining bills. The communication unit communicates with a central processor of an ATM(Automated Teller Machine). The controller receives a remaining amount acknowledgement signal from the central processor of the ATM and transmits an operation signal to the supersonic sensor. The controller receives the calculated distance from the distance calculator and determines the remaining amount based on the calculated distance. |
