The device has an operating element (26) to input an interior space temperature-reference value for a passenger compartment (16) of a motor vehicle (10). A sensor detects temperature, and a camera designed as an infrared (IR) camera (22) records a portion of the compartment that covers parts of different zones (18, 20) of the compartment. The camera has IR sensors that produce IR images. The IR images and a surface temperature of a passenger are displayed on a display (42) in the compartment. The reference value and/or a reference value distribution is displayed on the display.
