The method involves illuminating a part of a printing surface under an angle of the printing surface. A light received from a sensor system (16) is evaluated, and a printing ink containing pigments are provided by a color coating. A returned light is measured in a positive difference angle or a negative difference angle to a mirror angle. Measured values are processed and/or displayed, and the measured values are assigned to standard color values. The measured values are assigned to wavelength ranges. An independent claim is also included for a device for measurement-technical determination of color coating applied on a printing substrate.
