PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shock absorbing structure for an idler, enabling to absorb the shock of the rollers of a roller chain during first abutting on idler sprockets when engaging therewith while maintaining the function for a long period. SOLUTION: In the shock absorbing structure for the idler 1, one approximately radial oil supply hole 2c is provided in a supporting shaft 2, and the supporting shaft 2 is fixed to an engine block (a fixed body) 9 in the state that the oil supply hole 2c is positioned to be directed to a position where the rollers 5 first abut on the standard-toothform idler sprockets 3 when engaging therewith. The idler sprockets 3 have a plurality of approximately radial oil jet nozzles 3b whose outlets are opened to tooth bottoms 3a, opposed to the oil supply hole 2c in the radial direction.
