PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To secure good fuel economy by setting an expansion ratio at 20 or higher. SOLUTION: This spark ignition internal combustion engine is equipped with a variable compression ratio mechanism A capable of changing a mechanical compression ratio, and an actual compression action starting time changing mechanism B capable of changing the starting time of actual compression action. The mechanical compression ratio is maximized so that a compression ratio becomes not less than 20 during the low load operation of the engine, and an actual compression ratio during the low load operation of the engine is made almost equal to an actual compression ratio during a high load operation of the engine.
