A safety switching device 2 comprises an actuator 4 and a switch 6. The actuator and switch are moveable with respect each other, and the switch is operable in use to receive a signal transmitted by the actuator. The switch comprises: one or more switching circuits comprising a means to create pulses in the power supplied therefrom to one or more outputs 26, 28; and a means to simultaneously measure the magnitude of the voltage or current at the one or more outputs during the pulse. The switch may be a non-contact safety switch and the actuator and switch may be a Hall Effect device with actuator 4 comprising transmitter 5 and the switch 6 comprising receiver 14. A microcontroller 20 may generate the pulses to the output and may measure the magnitude of the voltage or current at the outputs. The microcontroller may then control the on/off status of an electrical apparatus based on the measurement. |
