PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an expansion joint for bridge capable of sufficiently absorbing a large oppositional force between bridges, facilitating the construction, and eliminating such constituents having possiblity of causing a filling accident and noise. SOLUTION: This expansion joint for a bridge is so formed that one ends of receiver plates 3 in a horizontal state are embedded in respective end faces of opposite bridges H, H so as to be drawn out by a prescribed quantity and the joint main body J is erected and fixed between the receiver plates 3, 3 projected from the bridges H, H. In this case, the joint main body J is provided with upper side grooves 10 and a lower side groove 11 extended perpendicularly to the bridge axial direction of the bridge H and an elastic belt body 1 which sets the interval between the grooves 10 and the groove 11 positioned in the adjacent to a shearing deformation part 12, and a high tension sheet or a plurality of high tension wires 4 are arranged across the groove 11 from one side bottom part to the other side bottom of the joint main body J. The sheet or the high tension wires 4 are firmly fixed to the one side bottom and the other side bottom of the joint main body J and the middle part of the sheet or the high tension wires 4 is so fixed to the constitutional wall face of the groove 11 as to be detached by a relatively small force.
