PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To readily control a reaction and produce the subject compound useful as a raw material for medicines, agrochemicals, etc., in high yield at a low cost in a short time by oxidizing a specific indanone derivative with an alkali persulfate in an aprotic polar solvent. SOLUTION: An indanone derivative represented by formula I (R1 and R2 are each H, a halogen, a 1-3C alkyl or the like) (e.g. 2-indanone or 4,7- dimethyl-2-indanone) is oxidized with an alkali persulfate (preferably ammonium persulfate) as an oxidizing agent in an aprotic polar solvent (e.g. N,N- dimethylformamide or acetonitrile) at 0-50 deg.C reactional temperature for 1-10 h reactional time to produce an isochromanone derivative represented by formula II. The resultant derivative can be separated and purified from the reactional system by distillation, recrystallization, extraction, etc.
