The invention concerns a device and a method for producing an optical data medium. In the recently developed data media (130) (for example, BlueRay disc), the thickness of data and/or protective layers is of the order (132, 143) of some tenths of millimeters. Those layer thicknesses cannot simply be produced with the current injection molding processes. The present invention aims at providing modern optical data media (130) having a smaller thickness. The invention also concerns such optical data media (130). Therefor, the invention proposes a device and a method which implement the known technique of submersion whereby an element placed in a cavity is submerged with a slight viscous substance, forming a protective or data layer, or a layer is produced and subsequently bonded to another layer.
