PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a communication system simplying a network configuration by passive optical network (PON) domains and logically expandeding a PON without consuming many media access control (MAC) addresses. SOLUTION: When receiving frames from PON ports 12a-12c of ONUs 1a-1c, an OLT 3 compares a virtual PON identifier (VPID) contained in a Preamble/start frame delimiter (SFD) region A of a received Ethernet(R) frame with a VPID assigned to the ONUs 1a-1c, and if matched, PON MAC processing is performed. When receiving a frame from a PON port 33 of the OLT 3, each of ONUs 1a-1c compares a VPID contained in a Preamble/SFD region of a received Ethernet(R) frame with a VPID assigned to LAN ports 31, 32 of the OLT 3, and if matched, PON MAC processing is performed.
