<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the coloring property of printed matter. <P>SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus includes a nozzle array group having a first nozzle array comprising a plurality of nozzles lined up in a first direction, the nozzles delivering a first liquid for forming a main image, and a second nozzle array comprising a plurality of nozzles lined up in the first direction, the nozzles delivering a second liquid for forming an auxiliary image, and a control unit that performs a dot forming action of moving the nozzle array group in the second direction and delivering the liquid from each nozzle to form dots on a printing material and a shift action of shifting at least either one of the printing material and the nozzle array group in the first direction. In a first mode, when performing the dot forming action, the image forming apparatus divides each of the first nozzle array and the second nozzle array into N<SB POS="POST">1</SB>(N<SB POS="POST">1</SB>denotes an integer equal to or larger than 3) nozzle groups, and thereby superposes the auxiliary image and the main image into N<SB POS="POST">1</SB>layers of images.
